As the inaugural release in Balvenie’s “Stories” range, this 12 Year Old Single Malt is a fine example of Speyside excellence. The inspiration came from Apprentice Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie, who sought to amplify the distillery’s signature sweet character. New American oak casks were sourced from the Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky and given an extra-deep toast at The Balvenie’s own cooperage in Dufftown before being filled with Balvenie previously aged in ex-bourbon barrels. The toasting draws rich vanilla sweetness from the wood, giving the final whisky a distinctive sweet, toasty character. Bottled at 43% ABV, it is best enjoyed neat or with a splash of water.
