Description
Suntory Kakubin is a blended Japanese whisky first released in 1937. Its name comes from the Japanese word for square bottle, and the faceted glass carries a pattern designed to resemble a turtle shell.
It is a blend of malt and grain whiskies, bottled at 40% ABV. Retailers describe it as drawing largely on bourbon-cask whisky, which fits its bright, clean profile. There is no official age statement.
Style: the character is fresh and gentle. Expect lemon and green apple on the nose, with biscuit, nut and a hint of coconut on the palate, finishing dry. It is an easy whisky with no heavy smoke or sharp edges.
To serve: Kakubin is closely tied to the highball. Fill a glass with ice, squeeze in a slice of lemon, add a measure of whisky and top with about four times as much cold soda water, then stir gently. It also works over ice or neat.
