Description
The Macallan Concept No. 1 is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky with no age statement. It opened the Concept series, released in 2018, and was originally aimed at global travel retail.
The whisky uses a double maturation approach that was new to The Macallan. It spends time in sherry-seasoned oak casks first, then an equal period in ex-bourbon casks. The result is a golden amber dram that bridges the richness of sherry wood with the lighter, sweeter character of bourbon wood. The packaging carries surrealist artwork and comes in its original box, which makes it an appealing gift.
Tasting notes
- Nose: buttery toffee, almond, ginger and cinnamon, with dried fruit, a little citrus and a hint of green banana.
- Palate: sweet orange and lemon, soft oak spice, fresh fruit and ginger.
- Finish: medium in length, sweet turning dry, with lingering oak, citrus and ginger.
Bottled at 40%, it is easy to enjoy neat or with a drop of water to open up the fruit. Concept No. 1 is available from Decanter Liquor with delivery across South Africa.
